First tunnel beneath the Thames

The Metropolitan Line

London was the first city in the world to have an underground railway: it opened in 1863 and transported 30,000 passengers on its first day of operation. Because they considerably relieved congestion above ground, underground rail networks were quickly adopted by cities worldwide. London's first line was called the Metropolitan after the word "metropolis", which is also the origin of the term "metro".
