Elevators
& funiculars
... a funicular or the elevator built by a follower of Gustave Eiffel to climb up to the Barrio Alto...
In 1928, a moving staircase was put into operation to serve a new working class residential district on the plateau above Le Havre. Designed to make it easier for workers to get to the factories near the port, it was an immediate success, carrying slightly more than 800,000 people in its first year. It was rendered obsolete by the development of the automobile and was finally closed in 1984.
