The work

Adrienne Grandpierre painted this picture in 1836, while still just a student of the painter Pujol. The subject gave her a chance to depict every essential attribute of an artist's workshop: the nude model, the stove heating the huge space, the curtain to filter too-bright light and miniature reproductions of the painter's works on the far wall. The painting, selected by the judges' panel of the Salon des Artistes français, gave the young woman her first opportunity to exhibit her work.

The artist

Born in Tonnerre in 1798, Adrienne Marie Louise Grandpierre Deverzy was a student of the Valenciennes historical painter Alexandre Denis Abel de Pujol. Some 13 years younger than her teacher, Miss Grandpierre would marry him 20 years later, at the age of 58.
